2018 Meetings
January 17th, 2018
September 26th, 2018
Delsy Morales began the meeting with an overview of the Wilmington Consortium and it's history. Katie Sparacino then reviewed the Healthy Family Calendar and passed the floor to Carla Aponte who spoke about the Community Health side of the Office of Health Equity. Carla spoke about their transition from the Department of Family and Community Medicine and what that means for Community Health and their expanded programming.
Paul Braden and Shirley Ibrahimovic then spoke about CampFRESH - a program that targets undeserved youth in New Castle County. They shared specifically about the summer program and the programs they offer year round for the youth and families involved with CampFRESH after which they asked people to contact them if they know of 13-18 year old children who might be interested in joining CampFRESH next summer.
Next up was Rysheema Dixon who spoke about the Play Streets that occurred throughout the Wilmington (26 in total) and the impact they had on the children, youth and families in the area. Rysheema shared some of the data collected, stories from the summer, and spoke about the Wilmington Police presence. There was also a discussion about community policing towards the end of her presentation.
Meghan Walls then spoke about Nemours Psychology, specifically their roles in infant/maternal health. Meghan spoke about their growth (adding 50+ psychologists over the past 2 years) and the ways in which her specific clinic, in the heart of the city, are able to meet the needs of youth and families in ways they weren’t able to do before.
Yukiko Washio presented on BOOST (Breastfeeding Onset & Onward with Support Tools) – a study and program that is home based, motivates women, and works to communicate with home visiting programs to better coordinate each other’s efforts.

To start off our June meeting, Delsy Morales presented first, sharing results from the Community Baby Shower, hosted by the Christiana Care Health Ambassador Program. The shower received positive reviews which were shared with the committee. There was discussion about future baby shower events and possible new locations for the shower. Speaking next were Liz Thorpe and Hazel Morales, introducing Boot Camp for New Moms. They shared about the training they went to in Denver, CO, how it relates to Boot Camp for New Dads, and details about how the program will help new moms in our community. Julie Hammersley then spoke about Recovery Centers of America, specifically about their addiction recovery centers in DE (outpatient) and MD (inpatient). She shared the benefits of their program, their locality to community members, as well as upcoming events for all to attend. Lisa Bechler from Jewish Family Services then spoke about their organization and her role as a Family Consultant and Case Manager. She reviewed eligibility requirements for their services, their mission as an organization, and how to refer someone to her/JFS. Tinisha Brown spoke next from Birthright of DE. She spoke about their work as a non-profit, specifically the free services that community members can received after visiting them. Tinisha Brown also shared about upcoming fundraising events for Birthright. After the presenters, the committee shared upcoming events, asked last minute questions, and the meeting was adjourned.
April 11th, 2018
Our April meeting began with a program announcement from Dr. Mychal Anderson-Thomas. She introduced Boot Camp for New Dads, a unique father-to-father, community-based workshop that inspires and equips men of different economic levels ages and cultures to become confidently engaged with their infants, support mates and personally navigate their transformation into dads. After she Dr. Mychal Anderson-Thomas shared what they're working on, Heather Baker from March of Dimes spoke about birth spacing and their state wide initiative to educate women of child bearing age throughout the community. Next, Ajawavi Ajavon from DAB Meditation/Every Man Counts introduced herself, her background in mediation, and shared about her practice. The mission of Every Man Counts is to educate, empower, and encourage self-sufficiency with fathers and promote strengthening families. Chandra Pitts, from One Village Alliance, spoke next sharing some background on her non-profit, specifically the support they're starting to work on with fathers.

November 9th, 2017
Wilmington Police Chief Robert J. Tracy spoke to the group about city wide initiatives and working collectively. Pam Gardner and Rysheema Dixon from DCHI/Healthy Neighborhoods shared updates on the RFP, taskforces and shared with the group the Mapping Moving Trains tool results. Dr. Mychal Anderson Thomas also updated us on Boot Camp for New Dads and Lourena Gboeah shared information on Jewish Family Services of Delaware.

September 7th, 2017
Noel Duckworth from DCHI/Healthy Neighborhoods shared updates on the taskforces and shared with the group the Mapping Moving Trains tool. Dr. Mychal Anderson Thomas updated us on Boot Camp for New Dads and the group shared updates from their organizations.

June 1st, 2017
Shared evaluation data from Community Baby Shower. The Healthy Neighborhoods MCH Task Force lead an activity on community strategies.

April 6th, 2017
During this meeting we shared information on the Kingswood Community Center Family Movie Night and the Healthy Neighborhoods team shared general information about the project.
February 2nd, 2017
Dr. Mychal Anderson Thomas presented information on "Boot Camp for New Dads".
